Roger DE VLAEMINCK
Eddy Merckx returned to the Giro di Lombardia in 1974 after his disappointment of being DQ'd the previous year.
Roger De Vlaeminck solidly glued to Merckx's wheel on the Val d’Intelvi
Merckx rode away from the peloton on the climb of the Val d’Intelvi 60 kms. from the finish in Como. Roger De Vlaeminck struggled but held tight to Merckx’s wheel. The accumulation of miles and great results in 1974 (results included the first ever Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and World Championship in the same year) gave the Cannibal tired legs. He could not drop a persistent De Vlaeminck.
Roger De Vlaeminck sprinted past a tired Merckx in the final straight to gain the prestigious victory.
